
The Natchitoches Police Department is investigating an accidental shooting that took place late Monday night.
Natchitoches Police Department officers, the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Northwestern State University Police Department responded to a residence on Sept. 8 around 10:31 pm in the 3000 block of University Parkway in reference to an individual suffering from a single gunshot wound. Upon officers arrival they located the victim and began life saving measures while other first responders were arriving. The victim was transported to the Natchitoches Regional Airport and was airlifted to a hospital in Alexandria where they are listed in stable condition.
Detectives were called to the scene and were able to speak with several witnesses and collect evidence from the shooting.
After speaking with witnesses’ investigators were able to determine that a fifteen year old juvenile was handling a firearm in a negligent way causing it to fire and hit the victim.
The fifteen year old juvenile was placed under arrest and is charged with Illegal Possession of a Handgun by a Juvenile and Negligent Injuring.

- Treat all firearms as if they are loaded.
- Keep all firearms pointed in a safe direction.
- Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
- Know your target and be aware of your surroundings.
- Know how to properly operate your firearm.
- Store your firearm safely to prevent any unauthorized use.
