Friday, October 3, saw the culmination of years of effort over the tenure of several NSU presidents and over two years of construction as NSU’s Alost Hall held its ribbon cutting before a crowd of approximately 75 academic, political and community leaders. NSU Provost, Dr. Greg Handel, served as Master of Ceremonies, welcoming the attendees and introducing each speaker.
NSU President James T. Genovese spoke, followed by Mr. Wes Alost, representing the Alost family. Former NSU Presidents Dr. Chris Maggio and Dr. Marcus Jones spoke as did Ms. Madysen Morgan, NSU SGA President. Members of NSU’s Purple Jackets and Blue Key Honor society assisted with the ceremony as well.
Internationally renowned artist and NSU associate professor of Art, Edgar Cano-Lopez, painted a portrait of Dr. Alost as part of a policy to commission portraits in each campus building named after a person to further honor that individual and contribute to a greater knowledge of the university’s history. Dr. Alost’s portrait was unveiled by Professor Cano-Lopez, President Genovese and SGA President Morgan.
The highlight of the event was the ribbon cutting officially opening the new facility. President Genovese was joined by the Alost family, SGA President Morgan, ULS system President Gallot and state and local political leaders in cutting the ribbon.
Constructed at a cost of $45,000,000.00 dollars, Alost Hall will replace the 1968 vintage Kyser Hall as the campus’ main academic building. Alost Hall features 17 classrooms of varying sizes, a café, meeting rooms and a Nursing training lab.
