The Northwestern State women’s basketball team set a couple of school records during a dominant Friday afternoon performance at Prather Coliseum.
NSU (2-2) shattered a school record with 18 3-pointers, helping the Demons roll to a 108-30 victory over Ecclesia (1-4).
The 78-point triumph is also a school record, setting a mark they set last season in a 98-27 win over Arkansas Baptist nearly exactly a year ago to the date.
The Demons jumped out to a 25-0 lead in the first quarter and added a 24-0 run that spanned the second and third quarters to turn a 40-14 lead into a 64-14 runaway.
Every player on the NSU roster scored and all but one made at least one field goal.
The previous 3-point school record was 14, set five times, most recently at Southeastern Louisiana in 2016.
The Demons play again Friday night at home against Arkansas Baptist.
MEN’S BASKETBALL: The Demons turned a tight first half into a runaway win on Friday afternoon, pushing past Ecclesia 95–75 at Prather Coliseum, but despite the margin, head coach Rick Cabrera didn’t hide his frustration afterward.
“I’m not happy with my team,” Cabrera said. “Defensively, we stink. It’s got to be fixed. The only positive I can say is we got one (a win) in the left column. We move on, but the way we defend is unacceptable.”
Ecclesia (0–5) hung around behind perimeter shooting and tied the game at 19 on a Paul Jones 3 with 10 minutes left in the first half, but the Demons immediately seized full control.
A 22-6 run gave NSU control and the home team headed into halftime up 50–32.
Even in what became a 95-point offensive outing, Cabrera was clear about where his focus remained.
“It’s good to see the ball go through the hole for our guys,” Cabrera said, “but they needed a game like this to understand the importance of guarding. They shot almost 50 percent against us. That’s strictly defense. I told them I don’t even want to talk about offense. I don’t care about assist numbers. I’m strictly looking at defensive numbers, and they were poor.”
The Demons head west this week for games at San Francisco and Grand Canyon.
VOLLEYBALL: The Demons wrapped up their season falling to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 3-0 (25-19, 25-19 and 25-18) Saturday afternoon at Prather Coliseum on Senior Day.
Prior to the match, NSU (1-29, 0-16 SLC) honored three seniors, Samaya Wesson, Makenna Tryon and Deja Benjamin as the trio played their final match.
“The three of them were willing to try new things all year long,” said Demon head coach Ben Kaszeta. “All three came in and said they would do anything to try and help the program and for that I will always appreciate those three.”
