Burn Ban lifted in Natchitoches Parish

Natchitoches Parish President John Salter has officially lifted the Parish-wide Burn Ban, effective immediately. The ban, which was originally implemented on Dec. 29 due to extreme drought conditions and a heightened risk of wildfires, is being rescinded following recent rainfall and improved humidity levels across the region.

“After monitoring the fire danger indices and consulting with local fire officials, we are confident that the immediate threat to public safety has subsided,” said President Salter. “I want to thank the citizens of Natchitoches Parish for their cooperation during the holiday season and our first responders for their vigilance during those high-risk weeks.”

While open burning is once again permitted in the unincorporated areas of the Parish, residents are urged to exercise extreme caution and follow safe burning practices.

Safe Burning Guidelines:

  • Check the Weather: Avoid burning on windy days when fire can spread quickly and unpredictably.
  • Stay Present: Never leave an outdoor fire unattended.
  • Clear the Area: Ensure the burn site is cleared of overhead branches and surrounded by a dirt or gravel buffer.
  • Have a Water Source: Keep a garden hose or a significant water supply nearby until the fire is completely extinguished.
  • Burn Only Legal Materials: Per Louisiana law, only vegetation and ordinary yard waste (leaves, tree branches, grass clippings) may be burned. The burning of plastic, tires, chemicals, or trash remains illegal.

Residents within the City of Natchitoches should continue to follow municipal ordinances regarding burning within city limits.
