The Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office High Tech Crime Unit is warning residents about a scam currently targeting church members throughout the area.
In this scam, individuals pose as a pastor or church leader and contact members, often by text message, claiming they want to send gifts or cards to church members who are homebound or battling cancer. The scammer states they are unable to complete the task themselves and asks the recipient to purchase items from a nearby store.
These requests frequently involve gift cards or other miscellaneous items, along with a promise of reimbursement. These requests are fraudulent.
If you receive a text message or other communication claiming to be from a pastor or church leader asking you to:
* Purchase gift cards
* Buy items with a promise of reimbursement
* Act urgently or keep the request confidential
Do not respond and do not make any purchases.
Instead, contact your church directly using a trusted phone number or official communication channel to verify the request.
If you believe you have been targeted by this scam or have already provided money or gift cards, report the incident immediately to your local law enforcement agency.
Remaining cautious and verifying unexpected requests can help prevent financial loss and protect others in the community.
