As temperatures rise, residents in Natchitoches Parish and surrounding areas are being advised to stay aware as honeybee swarm season begins, according to the LSU AgCenter.
Randall Mallette, county agent for agriculture and natural resources, said swarming is a natural reproductive process in which the old queen leaves the hive with roughly half of the colony to establish a new one. During this time, large clusters of bees may be seen gathering temporarily on trees, the eaves of homes, or other structures while they search for a permanent location.
Officials note that these swarms are typically temporary and will often move on without intervention. In some cases, local beekeepers can safely remove and relocate the swarm.
Residents who encounter a swarm are encouraged to keep a safe distance and ensure pets are kept away. Those needing assistance can contact the LSU AgCenter office at 318-357-2224 to be connected with a beekeeper.
