Nothing says Carnival Season like King Cake and the Front Street Market Place has a variety to choose from. This past Thursday, owner Allen Dawson drove down to Metairie to pick up his favorite King Cakes from La Louisiane Bakery. Fresh baked on Thursdays, you can choose from Cream Cheese, Pecan Praline, Bananas Foster, Chocolate, Strawberry Cream Cheese and Blueberry Cream Cheese.

Fay Lagrange stopped by to pick up six for a King Cake party at Fay’s Daycare. “I went all over town looking for a place that has King Cakes with Babies,” said Lagrange. “I know they took them out of the cakes but I couldn’t even find a baby to put in myself. You have to have the baby.” A native of New Orleans, she was ecstatic when she found out there were fresh king cakes from Metairie in town.

“Even though they are called King Cakes they are actually not cake,” said Dawson. “This version is made of a rich Brioche bread that is light, fluffy and sweet. Last year, La Louisiane Bakery sold 64,000 of them.”  Brioche is a pastry of French origin and the high egg and butter content makes for a rich and tender crumb.
