Will the Rebels be able to blast through the gates of Fort St. Jean Baptiste, or will they be repelled?
The Fort will be transformed into a Civil War Union Fort Saturday, May 28 at 2 p.m. Witness the local Confederate troops skirmish and raid the fort. There will also be an assault by the Confederate troops at 7:30 p.m. Watch the flames belch from the rifle and cannon as the sun goes down.
Fort St. Jean Baptiste opens Saturday at 10 a.m. Regular Park fees apply.
Yes. Any and all historical Civil War era flags may be flown at the event as this is a educational history event. No flags will be banned.
I just found out that this event is not sanctioned by our Local or State SCV Camps as it is not historically correct. I would be surprised if the Confederate Battle Flag will be seen; however, I wish the organizers success in the venture.
Correct this is not historically accurate, it is, however, an educational living history event. All State parks, including Fort St. Jean, have been on the chopping block for closing. This is a way to support the Fort and increase their visitor numbers.
All historical flags from that period are allowed, nothing is banned.
I am unaware of the local SCV, however, I do know some have sanctioned it, such as the Ward camp #1971 (it was in their newsletter). Hope this helps!.
Will the confederates be able to fly the battle flag without making people feel uncomfortable because of racism? Why is this okay but the parade not? Personally I think the sons should be marching every year. It’s tradition.
I just found about this today and am a member of the local SCV Camp…I agree that we should have been in the Parade as well; however, I am proud to see that this will apparently happen. A couple of years ago when there was a re-inactment on Front Street the local Merchants loved it, which I’m surprised they didn’t support us more for the Christmas Festival…
I’ll have my personal flag…
