The Natchitoches Police Department confirmed that the driver of a PT Cruiser died today, August 9, 2016, after his vehicle was struck by a Jeep Wrangler on University Parkway/Hwy. 6 near the Dollar General.
Greg Lemoine, who drove by the wreckage, said Jimmy Long, Sr. was one of his favorite people.
“We had breakfast together the last time I was in Baton Rouge,” said Lemoine.
A Democratic former member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, Long represented District 23 (Winn and Natchitoches parishes) from 1968 until 2000, being the “dean” of the Louisiana House when he returned to private life. A recognized authority on educational policy, for sixteen years, he chaired the House Education Committee. The Shreveport Times named Long “One of the 100 Most Influential People of the 20th Century in North Louisiana.” He was a member of the Long political dynasty.

I admire and appreciate his work for children with developmental disabilities and their families. It was my honor to know him when I worked in the Louisiana Legislature. May he rest in peace.

So tragic and heart breaking. Mr Jimmy Long was a man of honor and a friend to our family for years. He was always someone you could talk to easily. Our prayers for comfort are with his family. Six months ago my mother in law was also hit by a jeep and consequently lost her life. This is not how we expect our elders to leave this life.
LSMSA will forever be grateful to Jimmy Long for the role he played in establishing such a great high school that has given so much to so many people. The Long family’s continued support over the past 34 years has been crucial to the success of this school.
– A grateful alumna
Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Long family as they go through several trials right now including this. Mr. Jimmy always had a hug for me. His life was full of service to others.
So sorry to hear about Jimmy and loving thoughts and prayers to Dorthy and their son.
I remember when I was a kid, he rode on the bus that my dad drove for NSU the day of the Christmas Festival. We would pick them up in the morning and drop the off at Mayor DeBlieux house. Then pick them up from there and take them downtown and wait all day until the festival was over. That night we would drive out of town down Texas street past Dixie Dandy and he always stood up and cracked a joke. We had to take them to the Holiday in in the bypass or either to Prather Coliseum.
Prayers for the entire Long family. NSU and Natchitoches will surely miss this good man.
Last time I saw him was at a City Council Meeting concerned about traffic on Hwy 6 near Dollar General. How sad.
I personally owe alot to Mr. Jimmy Long. He was instrumental in establishing the LPN to RN program at NSU and funding the educational opportunities of so many residents of Natchitoches Parish. He was a truly Great Man.
