Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Deputies, Louisiana State Police and Natchitoches Parish Fire District # 5 responded to 911 reports of a structure fire off of the Valerie Smith Road just south of Natchez, March 3 at 5:31 p.m., according to the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Two Louisiana State Police Troopers passing through the area also reported the structure fire to NPSO 911 operators.

According to Natchitoches Parish Fire District #5, the residence owned by the Toussaint family was a total loss.

The exact cause of the fire is still being investigated, however, NPFD #5 members report that sparks from a nearby burn of old hay and winds in the area may be the cause of the fire.

NPSO Deputies and NPFD report that several fires recently have been caused by unattended fires spreading to dry grassy areas then causing moderate-to-heavy damage to property.

If you plan on conducting a control burn which includes any type of burn please monitor it until it is completely safe and the potential of spreading no longer exists.

We also recommend that you contact your local fire district if you plan on conducting a control burn.
