The NSU Middle Lab School Orchestra will compete for the third time at Festival Disney in Orlando Florida March 30 – April 1. The 6th, 7th and 8th grade orchestra will combine to form a 56 piece string orchestra and showcase itself against other orchestras from around the country.

Festival Disney is the premiere international music festival where over 100 orchestras, bands and choirs perform with hopes of winning the coveted Mickey Mouse trophy. Groups will perform at The Premiere Theater at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Theme Park. Three judges at the 900 seat back lot venue, featuring the latest state of the art technology, will evaluate the groups. Scores will be calculated over the two day event and the results will be announced at the awards ceremony held in the Indiana Jones Theater.

The N.S.U. Middle Lab Orchestra qualified for the event by scoring superior ratings at the Louisiana Music educators District and State Music Assessment Festival this past spring. The group consists of 60 string orchestra members and will be accompanied by the Lab School Music Director Katrice LaCour and 56 chaperones. The orchestra will travel 17 hours in two charter busses carrying instruments, uniforms and other items needed for the performance.

Students raised funds to offset the cost of the trip. LaCour said, “This wouldn’t be possible without the continued support of the arts by our Principals Caron Coleman of the Elementary Lab School and Ben LaGrone of the Middle Lab School. We start our string students in the 5th grade at the Elementary Lab and they continue their growth as musicians when they arrive at the Middle Lab School. Many students continue on through High School at Natchitoches Central and go on to receive scholarships from universities around the United States. We would like to thank the parents and local businesses that have supported our string program over the past nine years.”

The orchestra is currently accepting donations to offset the cost of the trip. It is also seeking financial support from businesses and individual sponsors. Financial contributions are tax deductible. Donations will help pay for transportation, accommodation and meals.
