School-based health care is a powerful investment in the health and academic potential of children and adolescents. This model delivers convenient, accessible, and wide-ranging primary and mental health care services to students where they already spend most of their time: in school.

School based health services play a critical role in ensuring that children and youth have access to high-quality, affordable health care. By providing medical, mental health, and youth development services on school campuses, school-based health centers (SBHCs) positively impact students’ health and learning. The mission of the school-based health centers is to promote the health and wellness of the children in central Louisiana through prevention programs, education and needed health care services.

School-based health centers are a unique blend of health and education services. Children need to be healthy in order to learn. Specially designed centers, staffed by physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners/physician’s assistants, social workers or licensed counselors and office staff bring health services to schools, increasing access to health care and promoting good health, learning, and educational achievement.

The Natchitoches Central, Lakeview, Marthaville and Cloutierville School Based Health Centers are a collaborative program with the Natchitoches Parish School Board and CHRISTUS Health Central Louisiana.   Financial support, for the Centers, is provided by the Louisiana Office of Public Health with matching funds from CHRISTUS.  The Children’s Miracle Network provides funds for additional needed services for the students.

The Purpose:

Good physical and mental health is fundamental to a child’s education and growth. That is why school districts in Louisiana are committed to the Adolescent School Health Initiative. This program is making it possible for healthy living to be an integral part of every student’s school day by bringing quality medical staff and services to the school campus.

Students spend a significant part of each day on school grounds. A school-based health center improves access for children and their families to quality medical and mental health care. This method of health care delivery is effective because prevention of student health problems is preferable to treatment. The goals of the SBHC are to:

  • Improve the overall physical and mental health of a student.
  • Provided assistance to students in selecting healthy lifestyles.
  • Work to eliminate alcohol/drug/tobacco use and unwise risk behaviors by students.
  • Reduce absenteeism, suspensions, expulsions, and dropout rates.
  • Reduce violence within schools.
  • Provide health and wellness education to students.
  • Provide nutrition, dental and physical education.

The school-based health center is not a substitute for your family doctor. The center promotes continuity of care with your primary care provider.

To be eligible for health services, a student MUST have a consent form signed by a parent or guardian for each school year. Registration provides important information to be used in case of emergency and is required for medication, treatment and laboratory tests.

We are asking all parents of the student’s in these schools to please fill out the consent for your child to be seen by the health center staff. Our goal is to keep the students in class and help to keep the parents at work. 1. Very grateful for the SBHC at NCHS. My kid was able to receive his flu vaccination and not miss any of his classes.
