Community members gather to sing to nursing home residents

Singing at Nursing Home

Wednesday mornings at Natchitoches Community Care Center are filled with raised voices singing a selection of songs from the book of Heavenly Highway Hymns.

Lisso Simmons, Jackie Cox, Pat Parker, Juanita Howell, Larry Ryals, Leta Brown and Elaine Smith spend time with the residents and find camaraderie through singing. The number of members in the group has fluctuated over the years but anyone is welcome to come and join them Wednesday mornings at 9 am and then at 10 am at the Natchitoches Nursing Home.

Cox said she’s been singing to residents for over 20 years. It began at Heritage manor. Cox’s mother was a resident there at the time and the activities director asked her to play piano for them once a week. It’s grown from there, mainly by word of mouth.
