A single vehicle crash killed a man from Marshall, Texas on June 23. Troopers responded to the crash around 10:30 a.m., which occurred on Interstate 49, north of Hwy. 174.
The crash involved a 2002 GMC pickup, driven by Michael C. Cope, 72. The GMC was northbound on Interstate 49 when the male driver lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle traveled through a ditch and collided with a tree.
The driver was wearing a seat belt, but was pronounced dead. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
While not all crashes are survivable, seat belts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of deathand will greatly reduce the extent of injury.
In 2018, Troop E has investigated 21 fatal crashes resulting in 21 deaths.
