Cellist Paul Christopher will present a recital on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public. Christopher will be assisted by NSU faculty members Dr. Chialing Hsieh on piano and Oliver Molina on marimba.

NSU faculty member Dr. John Dunn will do a pre-concert lecture at 6:45 p.m. The program will feature works by composers who composed music for film as well as for the concert hall.

Christopher. is Associate Professor of Music Theory and Low Strings at Northwestern State. Christopher has appeared as soloist with orchestras in Colorado, Indiana, Louisiana, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas and Panamá. He has also performed guest artist recitals in Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Mexico, Tennessee, Texas, Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama and South Korea. He has presented and performed at conferences in Alabama, Louisiana, New Mexico, North Carolina and Ohio. Christopher’s articles have been published in the Jacques Offenbach Society Newsletter, Strings, American String Teacher and Bass World. Dunn, an assistant professor of fine arts, serves as the course steward for the core curriculum fine arts courses. At NSU, he has taught fine arts survey, music history and music theory courses. He is currently vice-president of the Faculty Senate and the faculty sponsor of the NSU Gamers’ Guild. He recently completed his doctorate at Louisiana State University in Musicology; his dissertation explored the representation of disability in the music of Alfred Hitchcock films. His emphasis of study is film music, Romantic and 20th century music history, music and disability studies, and music in popular culture. Dunn is affiliated with the Film Music Society, Disability Studies Quarterly, the American Musicological Society and the Popular Culture Society.

An avid performer of contemporary music, pianist, Hsieh is devoted to promoting new piano solo and chamber works. Hsieh has been a featured pianist on seven CD’s for the Centaur, Innova, Enharmonic and Ballpark record labels. She joined the faculty of Northwestern State in 2016 as an assistant professor of collaborative piano. In the summer, she is the piano instructor at the Lutheran Summer Music Festival and Academy and the Sounds of Summer Institute. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the National Taipei University of the Arts, and M.M. and D.M.A. in piano performance at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music.

Molina is an assistant professor of music and assistant director of bands. He teaches the marching band percussion section, applied percussion lessons, an introduction to music education, conducts a concert band and co-directs the percussion ensemble. Molina is an active percussion performer, educator, arranger, adjudicator and clinician. He is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Percussion Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Iowa. Molina is a Yamaha Performing Artist and an education endorser of Vic Firth Sticks and Mallets, Remo Drum Heads, Sabian Cymbals and Black Swamp Percussion. His professional affiliations include the Percussive Arts Society, National Association for Music Education, National Society for Steel Band Educators, College Music Society and the Pi Kappa Lambda Music Honor Society.
