Harvard v Yale, Alabama v LSU, Army v Navy, these historic rivalries can’t hold a candle to the sheer enmity found between the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff”s Office and the Natchitoches Police Department when it comes to sports. Both departments took to the hardwood Wednesday, Jan 9th for a fast paced 7 minute game during the halftime of that night’s contest between the Demons and the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders. While the NPD put up a valiant effort, the Sheriff’s Department would not be denied and won this year’s bragging rights. The game was a fun addition to NSU’s contribution to National Law Enforcement Day. Law enforcement officers and their families were treated to pizza, chicken fingers and sweet tea before the game. In addition, NSU also gave away 100 NSU “Back the Blue” t-shirts to the fans.

While not nearly as physical as the sheriff’s office v. police department’s game, the game between TAM Corpus Christi and NSU was an exciting cliffhanger of a game that kept fans on their feet throughout the contest. The lead swapped back and forth throughout the game, with 10 points or less separating the two teams for much of the contest. The visiting TAM Corpus Christi Islanders won 62-61 in a heartbreaker that went down to the final seconds.

The Natchitoches Parish Journal joins Northwestern State University in expressing its appreciation to the men and women of law enforcement. Thank you for all you do in keeping our community safe!
