Saturday, June 1, was a busy day indeed for Natchitoches! The Natchitoches Farmer’s Market had 22 booths on Front Street’s bricks for the crowd to peruse while they enjoyed a variety of tunes from a local DJ. The marketgoers could choose from several booths selling home grown produce as well as crafts and snacks. The Louisiana Master Gardeners were also on hand to offer advice for anyone wishing to try out their green thumb.
Meanwhile, the delicious smell of BBQ was wafting up from the downtown riverbank as the Cookin’ on the Cane BBQ Competition got underway. This event is now in it’s tenth year and quickly established itself as an area tradition as well as the Jaycees’ signature fundraiser. The competition is sanctioned by the International Barbecue Cookers Association and the winners may advance on to bigger national competitions. This year featured 27 teams from Louisiana and surrounding states battling for BBQ supremacy. The judges had a truly difficult time picking winners from a truly exceptional lineup of culinary excellence.
