The 60th Anniversary induction class of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame is being welcomed to Natchitoches Thursday evening at the La Capitol Federal Credit Union Kickoff Reception, open to the public from 5-7 at the downtown museum.
The event is the official start of the three-day 2019 Induction Celebration, and follows a press conference televised live on Cox Sports Television from 3-5 p.m. to viewers in 18 states.
Former LSU football coach Les Miles heads the 10 inductees attending Thursday’s La Capitol Kickoff Reception, which is also designated as the month’s “After Hours” gathering for Natchitoches Chamber of Commerce members. There is no charge to attend.
Five-time USA Olympic volleyball star Danielle Scott (from Baton Rouge), iconic retired Southern University baseball coach Roger Cador, Canadian Football League Hall of Fame quarterback Matt Dunigan (Louisiana Tech), Alexandria-Peabody High basketball coach Charles Smith, 1958 LSU football All-American Max Fugler and Louisiana’s first great cowboy, Rodeo Hall of Famer T.B. “T. Berry” Porter of Leesville are the other 2019 competitive ballot inductees in the spotlight Thursday evening. NFL great Peyton Manning arrives Friday afternoon in time for the Rockin’ River Fest free concert Friday evening on the downtown Rue Beauport riverfront stage.
Two journalists, former Natchitoches Times sports editor Philip Timothy (NSU graduate) and Louisiana Tech sports radio voice Dave Nitz, will also be honored guests, along with pro tennis official Marie Gagnard (Alexandria, Louisiana College), the 2019 Dave Dixon Louisiana Sports Leadership Award winner.
