Northwestern State places pair on Southland Conference All-Academic Team

A pair of Northwestern State softball players were selected for the Southland Conference All-Academic Second Team, the league announced Monday after receiving votes from coaches, sports information directors and academic advisors.

Junior Elise Vincent and sophomore Cayla Jones represented the Lady Demons as NSU has placed multiple honorees on the team in each of coach Donald Pickett’s 11 seasons.

Both Vincent and Jones are making their first appearances on the all-academic squad.

Vincent surged in the final weeks of the season to earn an outfield spot on the All-Southland Conference third team after hitting .304 (NSU’s second best) with 19 runs scored and 18-of-21 on stolen bases.

The Maurice native cemented herself in the leadoff role for the final 10 games, including recording five hits in four SLC Tournament games.

Vincent has a 3.91 GPA as a biology major and chemistry major.

Jones ranked in the conference’s top 10 in nine different categories, including tying for the lead in walks (36), second in runs scored (41) and second in on-base percentage (.479).

The Missouri City, Texas, native led NSU with a .335 batting average, 41 runs scored, nine home runs and 35 RBIs.

Jones has a 3.33 GPA in business administration.
