NATCHITOCHES MAN WITH PRIOR VIOLENT TENDENCIES TOWARDS LAW ENFORCEMENT ARRESTED AFTER HEADBUTTING DEPUTY DURING TRAFFIC STOP

Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Deputies have arrested a Natchitoches man that headbutted a NPSO sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop on Thursday morning according to the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office.

NPSO Patrol Division deputies were patrolling in the City of Natchitoches on July 11 at 11 am when they attempted to stop a 2003 Buick LeSabre on Keyser Avenue for a traffic violation.

Deputies say the vehicle failed to stop traveling south of Keyser Avenue, then turned left on East Fifth Street, then right onto Keegan Drive through East Sixth Street finally coming to a stop on Scarborough Street.

While interviewing the operator of the vehicle, he identified himself as Eric Belle, of Natchitoches, however, deputies suspected he was giving a false name. When they asked him for his correct name he gave an additional false name.

During the traffic stop, the violator became combative and started to resist. During the encounter the violator failed to comply with the deputy’s commands, headbutting the deputy in the mouth dazing him.

Deputy S. Axsom requested assistance.

Additional sheriff’s units and Louisiana State Police responded as back-up units to assist.

Natchitoches Regional Medical Center EMS responded to the scene to assess the deputy’s injury.

Derrick Sawyer, 32, of 120 Reba Street, Natchitoches, La. was taken into custody, transported and booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center charged with Signs/Signals Violations, No Drivers License, Resisting an Officer and Battery on a Police Officer.

Sawyer has prior arrests of violence towards law enforcement officers.

Sawyer was not injured.

He remains in the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center without bond.

Deputy Axsom was treated at the scene by EMS and transported to a local orthodontist office for x-rays of his mouth where it was learned he had some fractured teeth.
