Zydeco Festival Brings People together for a Good Time

By Rickey LaCour

The Magnolia State Peace Officers Association hosted its 20th Annual Cane River Zydeco Festival this past weekend, Aug. 30-31, and needless to say not even two short power outages could stop the fun.

Friday night brought out a crowd mixed with locals and tourists who sat along the riverbank and took in the sounds of DJ Doc Couty. It was just a matter of time before some even took to the pavement to show off their moves and have a good time.

MSPOA member Vanessa Monroe lead the evening in the zydeco dance contest as she pumped up the crowd searching for contestants. Eight couples pulled out some of their best moves to battle for a chance at a $100 cash prize.

Couples were eliminated one at a time, and when it came down to who had the best moves Jonathan Conley and Trinicia Leonard were the first place winners and Viola Roque and Imari Roque came in second.

Saturday brought out the bikers. The riverbank was lined with motorcycles and over 70 individuals who registered for the Poker Run.

The On Point Band brought in the afternoon as they jammed and serenaded the crowd with cover songs and a few originals.

The evening brought more people as the sounds of T Broussard and the Zydeco Steppers flooded the streets of the historic district bringing together good people for a good time.

  1. One should try the original Zydeco festival in St. Landry parish. Keith Frank, Leo Thomas, Lil Nate, Chris Ardion, Cupid and J Paul Jr. just to name a few of the great Zydeco bands. But all the Zydeco bands are good, no mtter who they are. Them just wanting to keep the tradition alive is awesome!
