The Northwestern State University men’s and women’s’ basketball teams started their respective seasons in grand style before an enthusiastic crowd in a doubleheader Tuesday, November 5 at NSU’s Prather Coliseum. The men’s team made an auspicious start to the evening’s hardwood action with a decisive 84-57 rout of the Centenary Gents. The Lady Demons followed suit with an almost Carthaginian 91-61 thumping of LeTourneau University.
The NSU spirit groups were out in force for the night’s contest. The cheerleaders performed stunts, cheered for their Demons and threw shirts to the crowd. The Pom Line danced at halftime as well as throughout each game. The two group joined each other on the court for the traditional Demon Spellout. The brothers of NSU’s Alpha Phi Alpha chapter performed a brief step show after the Pom Line’s performance. The Purple Haze Spirit Band kept up a sonic buzzsaw of music, chants, helpful suggestions to errant referees and opposing player and coach harassment. When it is time for the other team to “warm up the buses”, the Purple Haze will be sure to give them a timely reminder!
The Natchitoches Parish Journal congratulates the Men and Women of Demon Basketball for tonight’s victories. Both teams are well coached, well disciplined and a joy to watch. On the court, and in the classroom, these young people are going places! NSU Basketball is an evening of family fun at a very modest price. Fork ’em Demons!
