Seven Students to Represent LSMSA at All-State Music Conference

On Saturday, Oct. 12, several students from the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA) attended the second round of auditions for the All-State Choir, Orchestra, and State Bands. Seven will move on to represent the school at the Louisiana Music Educator’s Association’s (LMEA) All-State Conference in Baton Rouge on Nov. 21-25.

Madi Kavanaugh (’21) of Bossier City and Sydney Sorbet (’20) of Covington will be representing the school in the All-State Mixed Choir. Elise Quebedeaux (’20) of Mansura will represent LSMSA in the All-State Women’s Chorale. Savannah Cecchini (’21) of Denham Springs will be playing the flute in the All-State Symphonic Band. Representing the school in the All-State Orchestra are: Jason Garrison (’21) of Monroe, playing the piano, Cailyn lee (’21) of Vidalia, playing the cello, and Stephen Wheat (’21) of Natchitoches, playing the violin.

Students from bands and choirs all across the state auditioned to be selected into the All-State music ensembles. During the auditioning process, students are required to play or sing one designated practice piece and one sight-reading piece in front of a blind panel. Students either submitted a taped audition or attended a double-elimination live audition in Tioga or Lafayette, and they must pass two rounds of auditions in order to be accepted into the ensembles.

The LMEA sponsors six All-State ensembles: Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Mixed Choir, Women’s Chorale, Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble. To be eligible for any of the ensembles, a student must be in ninth through twelfth grades, enrolled in a Louisiana-accredited high school and must be an active member of that school’s ensemble program. The ensemble director must be a current LMEA member. Students are eligible for membership in only one All-State group.

LSMSA offers a wide variety of music courses, including advanced music theory, instrumental and voice classes. For a full list of courses, visit http://www.LSMSA.edu/arts.
