Students and community members alike may explore a creative educational trend at Natchitoches Magnet School’s inaugural STEAM Night! STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math. It’s the new buzz word in education as all of these disciplines require problem solving and critical thinking. NMS STEAM Night hopes to build excitement for all students and grow them towards careers in STEAM fields. The STEAM Night will take place Tuesday, February 4, 5:30-6:30 at Natchitoches Magnet School.
Principal Stephonie French encourages students to consider their paths beyond formal education. She wants to students to truly believe that school today can prepare them for success in tomorrow’s economy. The present and future economy will depend on students who can adapt and learn a new set of skills.
NMS STEAM Night attendees are invited to dress up as a professional in one of the STEAM fields. Students will display their science fair projects and eagerly wait for the announcement of school science fair winners. Students who place at the school level will see their hard work rewarded as they have a chance to compete at the regional science fair.
STEAM Night incorporates several examples of the hands-on use of technology and engineering. Elementary and middle school students will demonstrate how they use online digital platforms and games to learn math. Fourth grade students will showcase their work in programming microbits. NMS Robotics members will run through their tasks with Lego Mindstorms EV3s. Adults in STEAM-related careers will be available to interact with and inspire students. Professionals from the fields of wood-working to medicine to engineering will be represented.
NMS STEAM Night will also feature performances by band and orchestra. Student artwork will be showcased throughout the school. It’s amazing to see students creative progress in their time at Natchitoches Magnet! There will be a silent auction of student art to benefit the school’s art program.
