The Natchitoches Police Department is investigating a double homicide that took place Monday night on Short Seventh Street.
On January 27, 2020 around 10:17 p.m., officers with the Natchitoches Police Department responded to the 900 block of Short Seventh Street in reference to a disturbance. Upon officers arrival they located Larry Batiste (B/M, 41 y.o.a. of Natchitoches), Hiram Phillips Jr. (B/M, 35 y.o.a. of Natchitoches) and a female suffering from gunshot wounds. Larry Batiste and Hiram Phillips Jr. were pronounced deceased as a result of their injuries. The female was transported to the Natchitoches Regional Medical Center and later to a hospital in Shreveport where she is listed in severe conditi

We’re getting just like Shreveport they have a killing every day
Me, I read a report that based on population, we have a higher crime rate than Shreveport. Scary that we have that reputation. My theory, the state sets bond amount for crimes committed. That is wrong. To the judges we currently have, I wish they would understand, they are too lenient. I was in court the day Judge Cunningham filled in. There was a young man there who had 5 attempted murder charges against him, and he was walking the streets. I watch the website of http://www.npsheriff.org offender list to just see what is going on, who has been arrested, actually locked up, the charges, and the bond amount. There was one guy who had a lot of charges against him and bond amounts that I considered pretty low for what he was accused of, and he’s out on bond. Charges like, sexual assault, resisting arrest, theft of a vehicle, Meth charges and enough of it that he was charged with intent to sale, theft of property, and there were a lot of others. He is walking the streets of Natchitoches. Because the state sets a bond amount that is low. Because the judges seem to think, poor guy let’s give him a chance to clean up his act. They are not working to keep the public safe, they and the state, don’t seem to have a concern about our lives, what these people might do to our children, teens, young adults. We seem to have marijuana users in teens, but when they get a little older, a lot of them turn to meth, and there are people here making meth. Fathers and sometimes moms of little children, that still have interaction with their young children are making and using meth. Users are unpredictable. Like the user who takes a shot at another user/dealer. Was he trying to murder that person? Does he have young children he thinks it’s ok visit with or even take with him when he buys, and the courts seem to think, give him another chance, he’s young, he’ll change if I let him out. I don’t agree. Meth users are addicts, they are unpredictable and possibly are very dangerous. Or is it Probably?
We have gangs in town, yes gangs, as in more than one. Are they killing members of other gangs. One kid told his parents, I can’t move with you over on the East side, they ain’t my colors. I hate this for the young people today. It’s not good for anyone, and mother’s just can’t believe their child would do this, they are good kids. Too bad local judges think it’s ok to let them go, let them out to do more stealing, and other mischief.
So now our reputation is that we have a higher crime rate than Shreveport. Police and Sheriff, please do something. Judges, for goodness sake, you don’t help these guys or gals by letting them walk the streets, they need to understand that they are addicts and they can’t help it. Others are just plain mean and you sure aren’t helping them. You need to help the honest people who do no harm to others by keeping these people off the streets. Some say there is no room at the Detention Center. Maybe it’s time to move the renters back to their own towns and to the US Government and the ones who are dangerous to our locals behind those bars. I think maybe the ones who aren’t doing the crimes in Natchitoches be shipped back to their local jails. Rent only what we don’t need, and someone needs to tell the sheriff that we need some people locked up, and then tell the judges to set higher bonds, then we will all feel safer and if the bad guys are locked up, maybe our crime rate will drop below that of Shreveport.
There’s something seriously wrong with our society! When, someone can kill with no thought of the pain it causes and without remorse is very sad!
The shootings in Natchitoches are more common than the public is aware. The only ones being reported are where there is a homicide involved. Please start reporting all shootings so the public can see what is really going on here.
We are off to a record start. Keep it low key so it doesn’t affect the upcoming festival attendance.
