Natchitoches Police investigating altercation at local restaurant

On May 15, 2020, the Natchitoches Police Department responded to a call regarding a disturbance at 805 Washington St., the location of Maglieaux’s Riverfront Restaurant in downtown Natchitoches.

The Incident Report below shows the details as provided by the owner of the restaurant. The last entry indicates that camera footage is available.

NPJ spoke with family members and representatives of Mr. Derrion Shields  who suggested that the camera footage will contradict the narrative in the Incident Report and show that two white males may have committed Assault & Battery against Mr. Shields.

A pending request for a copy of the camera footage has been made, but no official response has been received at this time.

  1. As someone who currently works in this place of business and has seen this place operate over a year I can confidently say that these people treat their employees like garbage. I’ve never had a job where I’ve been cussed at daily and screamed at, called stupid over the tiniest inconvenience and had someone smash glass in front of me to make a point. That was our parish president by the way. I’m saying this because I see their possy trying to refute the facts and I see this daily. Maglieaux’s abuses their employees and since most of them are broke college kids, know they won’t suffer any consequences. Don’t know how it hasn’t came up sooner. Watch the video

    • You’re telling me there’s a chef who yells when people mess up? Unheard of! LOL!!!! Go sit down snowflake. You don’t know half the stuff these guys have to deal with on a daily basis. I’ve worked in ALOT of restaurants and I promise you the chef at this place has NOTHING on the guys I’ve worked with in the past. He’s probably Mr Rogers compared to them! If you have a problem with him it’s definitely because you’re causing problems for him. Oh and btw, the servers are the ones who come in the kitchen with the send backs talking down about the customer. Chefs don’t have time to do that. They want to know if they need a re-fire or not and move on to the next ticket. Y’all need to go work the cash registers at Brookshires…

  2. The average person that has worked at maglieaux’s knows that brad John and the managers are very unprofessional. Brad screams and insults his workers for very mild things that can easily be fixed. Brad has insulted employees’ and customers’ intelligence over the smallest things as if he has never made a mistake in his entire life. Trust me they’ve made PLENTY!!! There have been Countless instances where Brad harshly disrespected employees and it got swept under the rug. The only people saying otherwise are people that’s lying to try to keep the business reputation in good standard. They are also asking for names on who’s saying things like this because if they find out it was anyone that works there now they would have them immediately terminated. Not for spreading lies, but for slandering the restaurant on the internet. From a former employee who will never step foot in that restaurant again.

  3. The average person that has worked at maglieaux’s knows that brad John and the managers are very unprofessional. Brad screams and insults his workers for very mild things that can easily be fixed. They claim they care about the customers but they DO NOT. If you think ur food isn’t made to your standards, your server is going to bring your food back to The chef and he’s gonna either curse out the server or make up every excuse in the book and call the customer a “f’king idiot”. You may get what u asked for but the way they talk about customers behind the curtains is immoral. Brad has insulted employees’ and customers’ intelligence over the smallest things as if he has never made a mistake in his entire life. Trust me they’ve made PLENTY!!! There have been Countless instances where Brad disrespected workers and it got swept under the rug because he’s Kathy Richmond’s Son! John richmond’s Wife! The only people saying otherwise are people that’s lying to try to keep the business reputation in good standard. They probably work for John somehow; don’t wait too long, soon he’s going to screw over those people too. They are also asking for names on who’s saying things like this because if they find out it was anyone that works there now they would have them immediately terminated. Not for spreading lies, but for slandering the restaurant on the internet. Coming from a FORMER employee who would never step foot in that restaurant again.

  4. John and Brad both treat everyone they work with and come in contact with fairly and with respect. They really care about their employees and go out of their way to give people second chances and the benefit of the doubt. Before anyone starts accusations they should see the video of the above incident and let the investigation be completed. John and Brad do everything in their work and personal lives with integrity. The truth will come out.

  5. I worked at Maglieaux’s for two years. I know Brad and Mr. John personally. I have never seen anything like this before when I was there. I can promise you if any altercation happened it was instigated by the employee. If Brad see’s any issues escalating, he defuses it by having the employee clock out and go home. This is worded to obviously slander the name of a good man.

  7. Speaking as someone who has worked at Maglieaux’s, I can say that the owners and head chef always treated me fairly. I never once saw an incident where plates or food were thrown. At most I’ve seen things slammed down due to frustration, but never thrown at employees. Also the yelling I’ve heard is very minimal and is usually escalated by employees.

    • Speaking as another former employee, I know that this is a completely false statement. The owner slammed glasses in front of us one time and glass and all over us.

      • I was there. He broke a glass on accident when showing the staff how to properly handle them and how to not handle them before washing. I think it was a demonstration about how we were stacking glasses as high as possible and they would fall. And your dramatics aren’t helping anything. Why would someone “break glasses all over” anyone. Doesn’t he have to pay for those anyway? Lol!

      • Anybody that has ever worked at maglieaux’s knows that brad and the managers are the most poorly professional people you have ever seen. The people commenting saying otherwise are only people from the job trying to lie and make it seem like they’re good people. It’s all a facade. Don’t believe it. They treat all of their workers like sh*t.

  8. Yea, I have worked at maglieauxs for months and I can not lie or stress when I say, The head cooks and management there SUCKS. Brad Higler or whatever his name it, SUCKS. He yells at everyone all the time for mild things, throws stuff, makes threats, and that is no place for anyone to work. John Richmond is just the evil father behind it all so im sure he is causing some issues. I mean the man wont buy proper cleaning supplies because he feels that water will get the job done. He’s only in it for the money, which isnt bad but dont trat your employee’s poorly just because you know you can just hire another “blacky off the street” What?? lol. I want to see video footage of a lot of stuff at this poorly ran restaurant.

    • I also worked at Maglieauxs in the past with John and Brad. I have always seen them treat the individuals they work with fairly and with respect no matter their skin color or background. They hold their employees to high expectations of course (as they should) but they lead by example and give 2nd chances. The racist comment is uncalled for.

    • True! the only people saying otherwise are people in the inside lying to try to keep the business’ reputation in good standard. It’s all lies. The average person that worked at this restaurant knows what goes down and it’s that the managers and John Richmond are some of the most incompetent and unprofessional people you have ever seen.

  9. Speaking as someone who was employed by this business, I can attest to the fact that employees are consistently mistreated, particularly in the back of house. There are always cameras on and recording. If you were to go through footage from the past several months, you can see clear instances of employee abuse. Whether it be screaming in the face of their subordinates, hurling pieces of food or kitchenware across the kitchen at employees, are neglecting to carry the proper chemicals for cleaning (this includes FLOOR DEGREASER), the leaders of this establishment have made it abundantly clear that the concerns of their employees are not concerns of theirs.
    Those who work so diligently to keep this business thriving deserve better.

    • As a past restauranteur I know for a fact how hard it is to find good help in this town and how frustrating it is to have careless kids (and adults) come in and disrespect your “home” on a daily basis. Something that you have worked so hard on day in and day out is just a play ground to them. And I know Brad and John personally and have worked in that kitchen from time to time. They are both good men and would NEVER say such things about anyone. And the guy who did the “yelling and throwing” was someone that they tried to take in and help but had to fire last year. So don’t spread false info about good people who work hard for something that they love in a town that they love! Sounds like a couple of disgruntled employees to me… probably got fired for a good reason

        • He wasn’t. That’s the point. These past employees are speaking about the actions of someone who hasn’t been there for almost a year

  10. Wait until the public sees the video footage… Mr. Parish President leaves some very big details out of the statement.

    • I would love to see the video. I have heard alot of stories about manager’s throwing things at dish washers an cursing at the worker. The people in charge in that restaurant have no respect for their workers.

  11. This is whom Natchitoches Parish wanted as president. Since, what went down at the chili cook off @ NSU last yr, He lost the little respect I had for him. Why isn’t the camera footage available for the public to see?
