Lakeview student receives band honor with John Philip Sousa Award

Myla Porter, a senior at Lakeview Junior Senior High School in Campti is one of the recipients for the John Philip Sousa Award for 2020.

The Sousa Award is the pinnacle of achievement in a high school band. Introduced in 1955 to honor the top student in the high school band, the John Philip SousaBand Award® recognizes superior musicianship and outstanding dedication. It was created with the approval of Helen Sousa Albert and Priscilla Sousa, daughters of the famous composer and bandmaster.

John Philip Sousa was an American composer and conductor of the late Romantic era known primarily for American military marches. He is known as “The March King” or the “American March King.”

Myla Porter was Band Captain and Low Brass Section Leader at Lakeview Jr.-Sr. High. She was first chair euphonium in the LMEA District II Senior High Honor Band and a member of the LBA All-Star BLAST Honor Band for the 2019-2020 School Year.
