The Natchitoches Parish Library (NPL) is pleased to announce that it is again participating in the 2020 “Lawyers AND Libraries” VIRTUAL statewide program in partnership with the Louisiana State Bar Association (LSBA). This year, given COVID-19, the annual program will celebrate its 7th year of service to the public by providing virtual services during the week of October 26th-31st. During this week, Louisiana attorneys will provide free, 15-20 minute “Ask-A-Lawyer” consultations by phone. Additionally, three webinars on timely legal issues will be broadcast on social media throughout the week.
Free legal workshops will be offered on Employment Law (12 PM, Oct. 26), Housing and Evictions (12 PM, Oct. 28), and Wills and Successions (12 PM, Oct. 30). These will be available as live streams via the LSBA Louisiana Lawyers in Libraries Facebook page. Links will also be posted on the NPL’s Facebook page a few minutes prior to commencing.
Individuals interested in speaking with an attorney are asked to visit https://lil.ivolunteer.com/2020 to register. A valid e-mail address and working telephone number are required to sign up. Attorneys throughout Louisiana will be assisting area residents during this week-long event. Participants in the free “Ask-A-Lawyer” event can receive limited legal services on a variety of non-criminal topics. Participants can have questions answered on subjects such as: Bankruptcy, Civil Lawsuits, Collection Matters, Custody, Divorce, Evictions, FEMA/Disaster Benefits, Food Stamps, Foreclosures, Housing, Medicaid, Social Security, SSI/SSDI, Successions, Taxes and Wills. Attorneys will contact participants at the number provided during registration.
“Lawyers in Libraries” has been a success because of the combined efforts of the LSBA, LSBA members, the State Library of Louisiana, LLA, Law Library of Louisiana, LSU Law Library, legal aid partners, local bar associations, and other community partners. This year’s virtual “Lawyers AND Libraries” events will be possible thanks to the many dedicated attorneys who will be providing much needed assistance, especially in light of the increased need for legal guidance caused by the COVID-19 crisis and hurricane related issues that are affecting so many Natchitoches Parish residents.
“We are so excited that this free legal advice will be available to our community this year,” says Alan Niette, NPL Community Outreach Coordinator. “We are hopeful that this popular program will be able to serve even more in our community since it will be available remotely.”
The program has grown consistently since being launched in 2014 and has assisted over 3,000 Louisianans and reached patrons in ever parish in the state. “Lawyers in Libraries” is a partnership between the LSBA, LLA, Law Library of Louisiana, LSU Law Library, legal aid partners, local bar associations, and other community partners.
