Councilwoman Washington: Video & Letter of Apology

A Letter of Apology to the Residents of Natchitoches

Dear Natchitoches Residents,

I sincerely apologize to the residents of Natchitoches, Mayor Williams and my fellow council members for my language in the video shared repeatedly on Social Media and now featured in the Natchitoches Parish Journal. You deserve to know the full story around this matter. I have been the victim of constant harassment by former Councilwoman Sylvia Morrow for weeks and I do not deserve this. Yes, I am a councilwoman, but I am also a human being. Her behavior is unacceptable to me and it should be unacceptable to this community.

On the evening this video was recorded, Ms. Morrow had come by my house to continue her intimidation and harassment. She has repeatedly followed me from stores and harassed me. She came back to my house the following day yelling profanities out of her car window at me. She continues to drive by my house and has followed me to work. Even though I have moved on from this incident to refocus on my work in the community, she continues to harass me. As late as Tuesday, she called the police saying I drove by her home while I was at my own home having dinner with my husband and nephew. She has lied on so many occasions about me. I have talked to my pastor and attended meditation classes to help me get through this situation.

I work every day to make sure the residents of my district get what they need and have been busy planning a Community Clean Up, scheduled for Oct. 31. On the day, this incident happened (Oct. 14), I had spoken to several city employees concerning trash in my community, as well as the leaking trash truck causing a horrible smell throughout my neighborhood. I spoke to a supervisor and he assured me the truck seal would be repaired. I had also spoken to someone at the housing authority concerning the piles of trash at one of the local apartment complexes. This is what each day looks like for me – working for the community.

Again, I am grateful to the residents of Natchitoches for trusting me and I want to make it clear that I am here to work for you. Our streets will be cleaner, we will have economic development in our community and we will restore pride in our community for everyone. I will work every single day to do my best for you. That is my promise.

Kindest Regards,

Rose Washington-Elie
Councilwoman District 4

Note: The Letter was received Unsigned by email with a confirmation by phone.

  1. What does race have to do with it? She was insulted and responded. Remember about casting the first stone. Sorry but Natchitoches is just a poor town in Louisiana absolutely nothing special. One day some of you will finally realize that. And does it matter if she didn’t buy a PhD from northwestern? I know some real dummies that have a PhD. Give her the benefit of the doubt. No degree required to be a good speaker or leader.

  2. Yet another pitiful excuse of an apology from the dodo of district four. Does this woman not realize that an apology filled with statements like, “I got influenced by this person… It has been a lot of things, negativity things, that been goin’ on about me and stuff and I just got fed up with it and stuff… But hey, you know, why is it so bad that I attacked her and basically she can just come and drive by my house and attack me and stuff, you know, it’s not right… But the things she said and done, you know, that really hurt. That hurt real bad and stuff, you know. Lies. You know I don’t know if people actually really understand when somebody lie on you and stuff you have a feelin’. You know everybody have feelins and stuff, you know…”?

You get the picture. Her statement rambles off her forked tongue with occasional apologies interspersed among much longer and more numerous reasons justifying her unjustifiable behavior. Aside from those moral shortcomings, I think it fair to say she could have benefited from writing a prepared statement, one with fewer you knows and stuff in it, then reading over it a few times to check grammar and stuff, you know, so as to represent her district with a little more professionalism.

And for those suggesting that she be left alone because everyone makes mistakes, is human, has flaws, etcetera; I’m quite sure she’ll be quickly forgotten and left alone once she resigns or is otherwise removed from office and once again becomes just an unofficial embarrassment to the city of Natchitoches.

  3. I’m sorry…but this, but that, but why should I have to take…whatever! Reminds me of one of my favorite television shows, Justified!

  4. It doesn’t matter if she wrote the letter or not. She apologized. Let’s move on and give the council woman a chance to prove herself. Everybody makes mistakes. Don’t forget the parish president and his mistake. Let this be a learning experience for all.

  5. Keep it classy Natchitoches. This will definitely attract tourists & families looking to move to the area.

    • Did you know that Clementine Hunter never learned to read or write? This did not stop her from pursuing her passion to create art. Councilwoman Washington, I encourage you and challenge you to make a difference in these next four years of your life and beyond. Use your social media platform to shine a light on the needs of your community. Is there an elderly person that needs a bit of yard work or home repair/is anyone in need of food items/is there even a stray pet that needs a home? I hope that you will be surprised and pleased to see a city that responds with compassion to those around us. I wish you well and may your consistent actions be enough to silence any negative voices.

  6. Interesting thought, I noticed the letter was in standard English and fairly grammatically correct.
Haven’t talked to her enough to get an idea of intelligence/education, but from what I’ve seen there’s a huge disconnect between her speech and the writing in the letter.
I wonder if she wrote it? NPJ, can you find out who wrote it?

    • BeBe your comment is a total insult in and of the matter of what has transpired… a cover plain to see as sowing seeds of discord, racial intent and degrading… you need to apologize.

  7. Videos are not your friend. JUST STOP! She is justifying her actions. Until she posted the first video a majority of the city did not know about this. BUT NOW everybody in the world can have access to it. AHHH Natchitoches, where are we headed? The written apology was clearly not written by her. It is to coherent and grammatically correct to come from her. So who is her “ghost writer”?

  8. Fyi…you lead by example. Whether Ms. Morrow had been speaking about you baldly or not, there are more effective ways to prove your point . Your lack of self control is a weakness and you are an embarrassment to our community. Please resign!!

  9. I’m trying to figure out who wrote the actual letter of apology? It clearly does not match with her verbal apology. The letter seems professional and she, however, does not.
Natchitoches. You could have done better.

  10. After watching both videos this best thing I see the councilwoman could do is to not make anymore videos. Videos are not your friend!
    GOOD LUCK TO YOU!

  11. Oh. Morrow was mean to her. Go ahead and act like a piece of trash then. Glad to have you “leading” our city. Can only imagine how terrible you will make it.

  12. That was a defense, not an apology. It was unacceptable behavior and this “apology” is grossly inadequate. It makes me embarrassed to say I ever lived in Natchitoches.

    • Did you not read the very first line? “I sincerely apologize…” . Give her a break. I imagine she learned from this experience. Who among you can cast the first stone??? Remember that?

      • Mayor. Get. Her. Out. Of. There. It’s. Not. The. White. People. Making. It. Bad. For. Blacks. It’s. What. She. Did. Replace. Her. Please
