A group of Natchitoches’ residents took advantage of an opportunity to “Make the streets your playground” at the inaugural Open Streets Natchitoches celebration Sunday, August 15 on Amulet Street.
The event was sponsored by the Mayor’s Health & Fitness council and was designed to promote exercise and healthy behaviors. The street was blocked off and became a playground for the evening. NRMC helped people stay hydrated with free ice water, while a sno-cone stand proved a popular way to beat the heat. Radio personality, host of 94.9 The River’s popular Morning Show, Trini Triggs, served as emcee and kept the action moving along.
Cheerleaders from NSU, NCHS and St. Mary’s kept the crowd’s spirits high with a series of routines. They also engaged in singing contests and a Hula Hoop contest with Hula Hoops supplied from the city’s portable park trailer. The St. Mary’s Tigerline also performed for the attendees. The hard-working young men and women of the Weaver Elites, now expanded to other schools in the parish, displayed their step show skills.
The Open Streets celebration is a superb idea. It was a joy to see young people from every area of the city coming together and having fun in a safe and positive environment. The album is unlocked and downloads enabled courtesy of the Natchitoches Parish Journal.
