When the Lakeview High School football team takes the field tonight, the Gators won’t be climbing off the bus for the first time in their 2021 season.
The home opener finally arrives as the Rayville Hornets cross Black Lake to get attacked by the Gators, who have not scrimmaged or played on their home field yet. That changes with the 7 o’clock kickoff this evening.
Both teams are 1-1, and both have had their seasons hampered by COVID protocols. Rayville had to sit out its opening game with Jena and forfeit after hosting a jamboree the previous week with Cedar Creek and Lincoln Prep. Lakeview didn’t get to participate in a jamboree, but was able to play its first two games of the season, although head coach Brandon Helms had to sit out last week.
The Gators opened the season with a 22-6 loss at Tensas Parish, but blew out Beekman Charter in Bastrop last Friday 40-0 as quarterback and safety Dillon Pikes scored five touchdowns – including two pick-six interception returns.
Defensive tackle Dillon Ireland has been a standout for the Gators, scoring their only TD at Tensas Parish on a fumble recovery and helping Lakeview stymie Beekman Charter last Friday.
Considering Rayville pulled out a 50-46 victory last week at Montgomery, and Lakeview scored 40 in its win, there’s a pretty fair chance the scoreboard could get lit up a lot tonight – unless the Gators D chomps down like it did last week.
Lakeview will also be home next Friday night, hosting Menard.
