Over 150 shooters from 17 schools from all over the state of Louisiana competed at the Louisiana JROTC State Marksmanship Championship in Alexandria. Lakeview’s AFJROTC Marksmanship team did very well finishing as the runner up in the Air Force division.
One of the shooters, senior Micah Martin, finished in the top 10 of all shooters who competed at the event and also earned the Sharpshooter badge for his high score. Additionally, Danny Smith earned the Sharpshooter badge as well finishing just 4 points behind Cadet Martin. Cadet Sydney Thompson earned her Marksmanship badge for her score during the event bringing Lakeview AFJROTC’s total to 10 Marksmanship badges this season for their scores during a competition.
“This has been a very good year for our team. Each of our shooters have shown great improvements in their scores”, said Major Wiggins.
Up until this Championship event in Alexandria, Lakeview had only competed in Postal events all of last year and so far this year.
Chief Thomas said, “this was a great experience for our team. They got to observe the mechanics of other shooters and to shoot on the Orion Scoring System, something they have not done until now.”
Their success this year has given them the confidence that a National level appearance is possible in the future. They plan to purchase additional equipment and improve their facilities to continue to encourage participation in this activity.
