Several civic leaders and organizations combined forces to host a Juneteenth celebration in Natchitoches’ Ben Johnson Park, Friday, June 17. The family centered event featured songs, dances, poems, and prayers.
The Natchitoches Parish Public Library was on hand with their popular sno-cone machine and educational prizes. NCHS art students displayed their talents with some superbly done pieces. The Hog Riders, a local civic-minded motorcycle group, also attended the celebration. Mr. Johnnie Barnes kept the attendees well fed with his flavorful grilling.
The evening also had a serious note in addition to the fun. The ladies of Zeta Phi Beta and the Natchitoches Parish Voters & Civic League were on hand to register voters. Ms. Regine Bell also spoke on the need for mental health awareness.
The Natchitoches Parish Journal wishes to commend each of the civic leaders who came together to put on this celebration of freedom and history. It was a delightful evening and we look forward to next year!
