NPSO: UTV crash claims life of a Winn Parish man; another charged with negligent homicide

(Ashland)-A UTV crash near Ashland has claimed the life of a Winn Parish man and led to the arrest of another on vehicular homicide charges according to Natchitoches Parish Sheriff Stuart Wright.

On Saturday evening, July 9, at approximately 7:25 pm, deputies assigned to the NPSO Patrol Operations Bureau, Ashland Police, Natchitoches Regional Medical Center EMS and Natchitoches Parish Fire Protection District #8 responded to NATCOM 911 Center reports of a UTV (Utility Terrain Vehicle) crash involving serious injuries on the Louisiana Trails off of the Bumgardner Road between Ashland and Chestnut.

Responding units arrived on scene finding several individuals applying first aid to a single person suffering from serious injuries. Natchitoches Regional Medical Center EMS arrived and requested assistance from Life Air helicopter. NPSO Deputies and Natchitoches Parish Fire District #8 set-up a landing zone near the Ashland Community Center.

Deputies say the preliminary stages of the investigation reveal that 21-year-old Jacob L. Pullig of Winnfield was operating a customized 2016 Can Am Maverick Utility Terrain Vehicle with his passenger identified as 24-year-old Joshua W. Feirn of Winnfield traveling southbound on the Louisiana Trail enroute to help other friends reportedly stuck when the for reasons still under the investigation the UTV experienced a mechanical issue according to witnesses exiting the trail on the left side overturning several times coming to a rest on the left side.

Feirn suffered life threatening injuries and was airlifted to LSU Oschner Trauma Center Center, Shreveport. Shortly after 1 am, the Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office contacted the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office reporting Joshua Feirn had succumbed to his injuries.

As in all serious injury crashes, and due to Standarized Field Sobriety Tests administered at the scene, Joshua L. Pullig was transported to the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center and administered a chemical test for intoxication. As a result of impairment and the chemical test, Jacob L. Pullig, 21 of Winnfield, was booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center charged with 1-Count of Vehicular Homicide and 1-Count of Driving While Intoxicated.

Pullig remains in the Natchitoches Detention Center awaiting bond to be set by a 10th Judicial District Judge.

Louisiana State Police and a NPSO Detective assisted in the investigaton.
The investigation is currently ongoing by the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies add the importance of utilizing safety equipment such as helmets and seat belts and never consume alcoholic beverages while operating any type of motor or off-road vehicle.
