School Board receives update on Virtual Academy, handles other business

The Natchitoches Parish School Board received an update with highlights from the Natchitoches Virtual Academy’s 2021-2022 school year at its meeting on July 14. 

NVA/District Gains (Grades 5-12)

  • The NVA was able to help the district gain/regain a total of 11 students from the following sectors within the state for the 2021-2022 school year: private school (1), home study programs (9), and/or other virtual programs (1)
  • The NVA also gained two students from the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA)

Star 360 Highlights (Grades K-8) (Selected & Open Admissions Programs)

  • Early Literacy: 67% (2 out of 3) Kindergarten students showed significant growth on STAR test from January 2022 to May 2022.

STAR Reading:

  • 100% of our 3rd grade students (2/2) ended the year with Basic(1) or Mastery (1)
  • 100% of our 4th grade students (4/4) ended the year with Basic (1) or Mastery (3)
  • 75% of our 2nd grade students (¾) showed significant growth from January to May 2022.
  • 63% of our 6th grade students (⅝) ended the year with Basic(2), Mastery (2), or Advanced (1)
  • 60% of our 5th grade students (6/10) ended the year with Basic (3), Mastery(2), or Advanced (1)
  • 60% of our 7th grade students (%) ended the year with Basic (2) or Mastery (1)
  • 56% of our 8th grade students (5/9) ended the year with Basic(2), Mastery (2), or Advanced (1)

STAR Math:

  • 100% of our 3rd grade students (2/2) ended the year with Basic (2)
  • 60% of our 5th grade students (6/10) ended the year with Basic (4) or Mastery (2)
  • 50% of our 4th grade students (2/4) ended the year with Basic (2)

High School LEAP 2025 Highlights Fall 2021 (Selective/Open Admissions Programs)

  • 100% of Algebra I testers (4/4) scored Basic (3) or Mastery (1).
  • 69% of English I testers (9/13) scored Basic (2) or Mastery (7).
  • 67% of Geometry testers (4/6) scored Basic (3) or Mastery (1).

High School LEAP 2025 Highlights Spring 2022 (Selective/Open Admissions Programs)

  • 100% of our 8th Grade Algebra I testers (2/2) scored Basic (1) or Mastery (1).
  • 100% of English Il testers (2/2) scored Basic (1) or Mastery (1).
  • 100% of Geometry testers (6/6) scored Basic (3) or Mastery (3).
  • 75% of Biology testers (%) scored Basic (2) or Mastery (1).
  • 60% of English I testers (⅗) scored Basic (3).
  • 56% of US History testers (5/11) scored Basic(2) or Mastery (3).

High School ACT Highlights

  • 60% (9/15) of our 11th grade students who tested for ACT in March 2022 received a composite score of 18 or higher!!

Dual Enrollment Highlights

  • 100% of our Dual Enrollment students (3/3) with Northwestern State University were successful in their courses.
  • 100% of our students (1/1) enrolled at CLTCC during the Fall semester for CNA was successful and was able to begin working in her field for Hospice of Natchitoches in January 2022.

Redirection Program Highlights

  • 20 students successfully passed 75-100% of their courses for the 21-22 school year and were promoted to their next grade level.
  • 8 students were successful in returning and remaining at their home-based school(s) for the remainder of the 21-22 school year!
  • 2 redirection students and their parent(s) have opted to return to NVA for the 22-23 school year. These students were also able to meet our GPA requirement for admissions into our selective admissions program!
  • 1 redirection student was able to maintain success in his dual enrollment course with Northwestern State University while in our program!

Graduation Rates for NVA

  • 100% of our 14 seniors for Natchitoches Central (13) and Lakeview (1) High
  • Schools were able to graduate on time with their classes!
Agenda items included:
  • Declare MLK Head Start building located at 415 MLK Dr. and any contents therein, as surplus.
  • Approve the request to advertise for bids for digital signage in the NCHS Atrium area.
  • Approve advertising for bids for demolition of MLK Head Start building.
  • Approve the request to advertise for bids for a truck for the Technology Department (to be paid for with ESSER funds).
  • Approve the bid for school year 22-23 Milk Contract to Mid-State Marketing, LLC
  • Approve Paper and Cleaning Bid Awards to Carefree Janitorial Supply, Fastenal Company, Daxwell, Economical Janitorial & Paper Supply, and Unipack Corporation for the 22-23 school year as listed in the attached documentation.
  • Approve changes made to page 6 of the new salary schedule where attendance clerk column was added and bookkeeper position was adjusted from 11 months to 12-month employee.
  • Adopt the Resolution to canvas the returns of April 30, 2022, for parish-wide sales tax renewal.
  • Approve the revisions to General Fund and BRE Fund Budgets for the 21-22 academic year.
