NSU’s CAPA on the Cane Showcases the Talent to be Found at Our Hometown University

Northwestern State University’s always superb School of Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) presented its annual “CAPA on the Cane” concert Saturday, March 11 at the downtown riverbank. The event, held in conjunction with Bloomin’ on the Bricks and Art Along the Bricks, featured an eclectic selection of music that showcased the range of the school’s offerings as well as the talents of NSU’s students. In addition to the concert, NSU art students and faculty displayed their artwork to the public during the “Art Along the Bricks” event.

The event was opened by NSU dance students followed by the NSU steel drum band. The steel drum band, NSU’s newest ensemble, is known for playing Caribbean tunes while dressed in their signature tropical shirts. The steel band concluded its part of the concert with their traditional Conga line consisting of “volunteers” from the audience. Musical theater students sang several selections from their repertory and wowed the audience with their vocal range. There was even an operatic selection from “Porgy and Bess”.

The NSU/Natchitoches Symphony Orchestra then played followed by the NSU Jazz Orchestra who closed the concert with their silky smooth jazz sounds. CAPA on the Cane is a true delight. Northwestern State University has some superbly talented students, and it is a joy to see them reach their potential.
