From Cane River to Road Maintenance

Gov. John Bel Edwards recently signed Senate Bill No. 53 (ACT No. 37 by Senator Louie Bernard and Representatives Gabe Firment, Barbara Freiberg, Foy Gadberry, Cedric Glover, Ed Larvadain, and Rodney Schamerhorn) from the 2023 Regular Legislative Session into law. ACT No. 37 provides for the powers and authority of the commission of the Cane River Waterway District to assist the Natchitoches Parish Government in the maintenance of roads that are:

  1. currently part of the parish road system, AND
  2. access Cane River Lake

Any assistance is subject to funding.

“I was requested to seek this authority in an effort to seek assistance for our parish roads,” said Bernard. “Obviously, if it is the decision of CRWC to provide said assistance, residents on those roads would be benefitted. In addition, any roads maintained by groups or agencies with funds available for that purpose, increases the amount of funding the Council would have to maintain other roads.”
