Update: Court orders Jackson Jones Jr. to withdraw candidacy within 24 hours

After a brief time in court on Aug. 21 Judge Lala Sylvester gave Jackson Jones Jr. 24 hours to withdraw his candidacy for Natchitoches Parish Sheriff, or else the state will declare he is disqualified.

The State of Louisiana, on behalf of The Louisiana Board of Ethics, recently filed a petition objecting to the candidacy of Jackson Jones Jr. because he owes imposed fines totaling $4,620 to the Board as of Aug. 10.

The petition stated that Jones falsely certified on his notice of candidacy that he does not owe any outstanding fines, fees or penalties pursuant to the Campaign Finance Disclosure Act as provided in R.S. 18:463(A)(2).

La. R.S. 18:492(A)(6) provides that an action objecting to the candidacy of a person who qualified as a candidate shall be based on the grounds that the defendant falsely certified on his notice of candidacy that he does not owe any outstanding fines, fees or penalties pursuant to the Code of Governmental Ethics.
