The City Council held a public hearing at the start of its Aug. 28 meeting, followed by the introduction of an ordinance for the issuance of the City’s Utilities Revenue Bonds in an amount not to exceed $11,645,000.
One of the first meetings when Ronnie Williams Jr. stepped into his role as Natchitoches Mayor, dealt with the rehabilitation of the City’s water treatment plant. Water and electric rate studies, town halls, and securing a $5 million grant were all steps toward providing residents with better water.
The bond is for the following purposes (system refers to the combined waterworks plant and system, the electric power and light plant systems and sewer utility system):
- Acquire and construct additions, extensions and improvements to the sewer utility portion of the system, including but not necessarily limited to equipment and fixtures
- Fund a debt service reserve fund or purchase a reserve fund policy, if necessary
- Pay the cost of issuance of the bonds, including the costs of purchasing a bond insurance policy, if necessary.
An important part of the project, a clarifier will remove suspended particles and colors from the water that is drawn from Sibley Lake.
“It’s been a long time coming,” said Utilities Director Matt Anderson, who explained how the construction of a new water treatment plant and the rehab of two other plants will increase the water plant capacity from 8 million gallons a day to 12 million.
“This administration has been highly focused on infrastructure,” said Williams.
