The American Legion and Auxiliary Post 10 of Natchitoches, hosted an Ice-Cream Social for students from local high schools who attended Louisiana Girls and Boys State. The sessions were held at NSU during the last two weeks of June. These students learned about local, parish, and state government. They each ran for an office and campaigned during a political rally. They each had an opportunity to write and make a speech, and work with members of their city and parish to persuade citizens to vote for them or the candidate they were supporting.
The students also welcomed guest speakers, who are currently holding public office, to share their duties and responsibilities of specific offices. Thanks to local sponsors who donate to this program annually, the Legion and Auxiliary are able to send our students to this Leadership Program. Nine girls and seven boys completed the week-long program. Many parents and siblings attended the social on Aug. 27. The Citizens shared their experiences of being a delegate, and the Boys sang their theme song, “You Are My Sunshine,” while the girls performed one of their cheers, “Give Me That Mac- N-Cheese.”
It was a fun afternoon and all the students stated they enjoyed the program and made new friends from around the state.
