“Where you start from does not necessarily determine where you will end up.” Those words from NSU President Dr. Marcus Jones, perfectly sum up the philosophy of the Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) program at Natchitoches Junior High School and the Natchitoches Parish Technical & Career Center.
Dr. Jones was the keynote speaker at the eighth annual Initiation and Installation Ceremony held Thursday, September 28 for the over 100 young men and women who are joining the JAG program. The program is intended to prepare middle school students for high school and to prepare high school students for life after graduation.
NPSB student Tristen Jefferson gave the invocation followed by opening remarks by She’Kinya Pipkin. The NCHS Army JROTC color guard presented the flag and high school student Mazette Queen performed a stunning rendition of the National Anthem. Judge Desiree Dyess wore her judicial robes as she administered the oath of office to the incoming JAG officers and the induction oath to the new members. Each new JAG member was presented with a membership certificate. The NCHS JROTC Soldierettes slap team ended the ceremony with a performance.
The success of both schools’ JAG program is quite evident when one sees the dress and demeanor of the young people in the program. They have made a serious promise before their teachers, friends, and families to learn and better themselves. The students can also see that there are many adults who believe in their potential and stand ready to help them.
Dr. Jones had it exactly right, where you start does not determine where you end up. Work hard, achieve, and go on to do great things. We will be cheering you on!
