St. Mary’s Catholic School recently announced the induction of Fr. John Cunningham, a distinguished alumnus from the Class of 1951, into the St. Mary’s Catholic School Academic Hall of Fame during an All-School Mass on Wednesday, January 29. The special event was held as part of the school’s observance of Catholic Schools Week, a cherished tradition celebrating faith, education, and community.
In a heartwarming addition to the celebration, members of Fr. Cunningham’s family, many of whom are also devoted St. Mary’s alumni, were present to honor his remarkable journey and witness this meaningful recognition.
A Life of Faith and Service:
Fr. Cunningham’s path began with a strong foundation at St. Mary’s Academy. He furthered his education at Louisiana State University and completed his theological studies at St. John’s Seminary in Boston, leading to his ordination as a priest on February 20, 1965, by Bishop Charles Greco. Over the next three decades, he brought light and faith to numerous parishes across Louisiana.
Notable milestones in his distinguished journey include:
- Ordination: February 20, 1965, by Bishop Charles Greco
- Priestly Service: Leading numerous parishes across Louisiana
- Educational Achievements: St. Mary’s Academy, Class of 1951; Northwestern College, 1951-1953; Louisiana State University, Class of 1956; and St. John’s Seminary, Boston, 1959-1965
- Golden Jubilee: Celebrated his 50th Ordination Anniversary at the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception on February 20, 2015
Although Fr. Cunningham retired in 1996, his enduring influence remains deeply cherished by the Catholic community, including The Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and St. Mary’s Catholic School.
“The Hall of Fame is a lasting tribute to the achievements and dedication of outstanding members of our school family. We are deeply honored to recognize Fr. Cunningham’s lifelong commitment to faith and service during this meaningful celebration,” said Stephen Wren, Principal.
