An Ohio man has been removed from the ballot in the race for Powhatan Police Chief.
A court ruled that Nicholas Christopher Douglas of Toledo, Ohio, did not meet the residency requirements to run for office. The District Attorney’s Office argued that Douglas had not lived or voted in Natchitoches Parish for at least a year, as required by law.
During the hearing, multiple officials testified that Douglas was not a resident or registered voter in the parish. Records showed he had twice applied for voter registration by mail using addresses that were either vacant or unverified. Douglas, appearing via Zoom, provided no proof of residency in Louisiana and presented an Ohio driver’s license.
The court disqualified Douglas from the election.
Douglas had no opposition, the position of Powhatan Police Chief remains vacant.
Attorney for the District Attorney was Steven P. Monsour.
Ray Wood and Natalie Bordelon for the Louisiana Secretary of State.
Gary L. Conday was the court-appointed attorney representing Douglas.
The presiding judge was Lala B. Sylvester.
