Natchitoches community unites to support Red River Area Special Olympic Games

The Natchitoches community gathered to participated in the Red River Area Special Olympic Games, held at Northwestern State University (NSU) on March 18.

The event brought local athletes together to showcase their skills and celebrate their accomplishments in a series of inspiring competitions.

Organizations and schools participating in the event were 65-students enrolled in Natchitoches Parish schools, 40-students enrolled in Red River Parish schools, 28-students from Castor, 8-students from Cenla, and 24-students at NARC in Natchitoches.

The games began with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a prayer, and the Flame of Hope was dedicated in honor of the late Louisiana State Police Lt. Amanda Fournier. Northwestern State University President James T. Genovese addressed the athletes and wished them luck.

The NPSO showed unwavering support for the athletes by providing brown bag lunches to participants, ensuring they could focus on the games without the concern of meals. Sheriff Wright and deputies were also on hand to cheer on the athletes, offering words of encouragement and sharing in the joy of the event.

Natchitoches Mayor Ronnie Williams, Natchitoches Police Chief Nikeo Collins, NSU Police, Natchitoches Police, Department, Louisiana State Police, Natchitoches Fire Department, Louisiana Adult Probation & Parole-Natchitoches District, and Natchitoches Regional Medical Center EMS also attended the event and showed their support of the athletes along with several other groups and businesses in Natchitoches.

“We are honored to be part of such a special day and to support these incredible athletes,” said Sheriff Stuart Wright. “Their dedication and perseverance are truly inspiring, and it’s a privilege for the NPSO to provide a small token of support.”

The Red River Area Special Olympics provides an opportunity for individuals with intellectual disabilities to compete in a variety of athletic events. Many of the athletes participating in today’s games may have the chance to advance to the state competitions. The event is an important part of the community, offering athletes a platform to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, and experience the joy of competition.
