Area high school juniors, seniors recognized for service on Mayor’s Youth Council

Local high school juniors and seniors from the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA), St. Mary’s Catholic School and Natchitoches Central were honored at the April 28 City Council meeting for their service and leadership as members of the Mayor’s Youth Council, receiving certificates of participation.

City of Natchitoches First Lady Tiffany Williams, who serves as the council’s sponsor, addressed the Council, reflecting on the achievements of the youth council this year and the importance of youth involvement in civic life.

“I’ve had the privilege of creating opportunities for young people to connect with their local government,” Williams said. “The Mayor’s Youth Council encourages students to learn how our city operates, discover their own voices, and see the difference they can make—whether or not they ever hold an elected position.”

Throughout the year, members of the Mayor’s Youth Council engaged in a variety of activities. They met to discuss key issues impacting the city, participated in the State of the City address, learned about local history by studying the life and legacy of Ben D. Johnson, promoted Earth Day initiatives, volunteered in community service projects, and proudly wore their official MYC apparel at various events.

“Our students balance incredibly busy lives with academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities, yet they still found time to serve their community,” Williams added. “They are truly an outstanding group of young leaders.”

As many of the council members prepare to graduate and pursue higher education and career goals, Williams expressed her hope that their time on the Mayor’s Youth Council leaves a lasting impact.

“I hope the friendships, the lessons, and the pride they gained through this experience stay with them,” she said. “No matter where life takes them, we want them to carry the spirit of civic engagement into every community they touch.”

The Mayor’s Youth Council continues to be an important initiative in the city’s efforts to engage young residents in local governance, inspire civic pride, and develop the next generation of leaders.
