Natchitoches Central and St. Mary’s athletes each won state titles at the recent LHSAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
NCHS sophomore Jack Wilson was a double winner, claiming championships in the wheelchair division of Class 5A in the shot put and javelin.
He reached personal records in the Region 1 meet at NSU last month, qualifying to compete at LSU’s Bernie Moore Track Stadium in the state meet. Saturday, he set two more PRs when he won the shot with a 4-5 ¼ throw and the javelin with a mark of 11-7 1/4.
St. Mary’s junior Chalin Gandy captured the boys Class A pole vault crown at the state meet’s first day last Thursday with a clearance of 10-11 ½.
In the girls Class A high jump, SMS eighth-grader Macie Coleman finished second and won a silver medal by getting over at 4-11 ¾.
Gandy’s sister, seventh-grader Corbyn Gandy, took fourth in the girls Class A pole vault, clearing 8-6.
Wilson and his twin brother, Woody, are believed to be the first wheelchair competitors in the history of NCHS track and field. Woody got sick and was unable to compete at regionals, therefore missing out on a chance to qualify for the state meet.
