As Natchitoches Parish School Board Member for District 7, I wanted to take time to say a few words to the Goldonna community following the closure of Goldonna Elementary Jr High School. To be completely honest I have started this letter multiple times not knowing exactly what to say. I will start by saying you all should be proud of the impact Goldonna School has left on Natchitoches Parish and its students over the last 112 years. Since 1913 many great students were produced into great citizens by great teachers and staff. All being supported by a small prideful town in the northern part of the parish.
To the current administration and staff of Goldonna, l say thank you for continuing to work hard in the classroom for our students. I know it was not easy with all that has went on in the past two years. You all finished this year knowing it was your last with pride. That’s what makes Goldonna, Goldonna!
To the parents of students moving to Fairview Alpha or Lakeview please know that your kids are in good hands. Fairview has shown tremendous growth academically over the past several years. Mrs. Triggs has a great staff in place and they welcome you to be apart of their Wildcat family. As most are aware Lakeview is finishing up year one under its new administration with Mr. Stepp and his team. So much has changed for the better at Lakeview and we are all very excited for their future.
To the local community I thank you for always supporting your school in everything no matter what. It is an honor to serve as your representative on the board. I understand this decision was very difficult to accept. Some of you may never accept it or understand but please know that no stone was left unturned. The closure of the Red River Mill by IP was something that no one saw coming. When an event like that happens very difficult decisions must be made that unfortunately send ripple effects throughout the community. I ask that you please continue to support these students at their new schools. Parental and community support is vital.
Lastly I will say as your board representative I assure you that you will still be represented as you always have. We have created a “Goldonna Committee” amongst the board. We are in talks about the Goldonna campus and its future. I for one promise to see that it is maintained while these discussions continue and do what most makes sense. Especially when it comes to your tax dollars. The 10 mill special Goldonna tax that passed last year will NOT be levied by the board anymore. That has already been voted on and passed. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out if I can help in any way. Thank you for your time.
