The Cane River National Heritage Area, in partnership with the Cane River Waterway Commission and the City of Natchitoches, announces that construction began on Thursday, May 29, 2025, on a new seawall along the east side of Cane River Lake in downtown Natchitoches.
The project will address the failing seawall along city-owned property, located between roughly St. Maurice Avenue and Sirod Street, north of the Church Street Bridge, and from St. Clair Avenue to Stephens Avenue, south of the Church Street Bridge. This effort is part of a broader initiative to stabilize the riverbank, prevent further erosion, and ensure continued safe public access along the historic downtown riverfront.
Funding for the downtown seawall project has been provided by the Cane River Waterway Commission.
CRC Worx Construction of Robeline, Louisiana, has been selected as the contractor. Construction is expected to take approximately 130 calendar days, with work scheduled Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and occasional Saturday work as needed.
While construction is ongoing, the City of Natchitoches will work to minimize disruptions. Temporary closures or detours near the work zone may be required for safety, and the public is encouraged to follow posted signage and exercise caution in the area.
