When Northwestern football coaches and players, along with other athletic staff and supporters, take to boats to post promotional signs and greet season ticket buyers each July, it’s a great time to make new friends.
Friday, during the Cane River portion of the event, Demons’ football coach Blaine McCorkle found a new pal – man’s best friend. And, as it turns out, it was a popular pup well known to those to enjoy riding on the river.
Riding with local businessman and avid NSU supporter Dustin Cross, McCorkle began to step onto Nolton Causey’s dock to post a sign along the seawall. It took longer than expected, thanks to the enthusiastic welcome from “Crazytown Boyd,” known to many as simply “Crazy.”
This dog had no bite, only a cheerful bark. He didn’t wait for the Demon coach to exit the boat before Crazy joined everybody on it, greeting everyone to his stretch of the river.
McCorkle can only hope his defensive backs are as agile as Crazy, who eventually made it back to the dock and escorted McCorkle to a preferred spot to post the sign.
His joy greeting the visitors was apparent – so much so that it seemed Crazy was actually smiling.
Hospitality up and down the river was top notch, as it was around Sibley Lake. Taking care of the north end and downtown stretches of Cane River were boat captain and former Demon defensive lineman John Evans and NSU athletic administrator and Natchitoches native Scott Maggio. Out on Sibley Lake, NSU professor Dr. Tara Tietjan Smith made certain that signs delivered by Demon football players made landfall to an array of season ticket holders.
Maggio said there are more signs ready to be delivered to those who get their season tickets in the coming weeks. They can be purchased online at NSUTickets.com or in person at the Athletic Ticket Office located at the Donald G. Kelly Athletic Complex Fieldhouse.
