Heat advisory in effect through Tuesday evening for Natchitoches, surrounding areas

A heat advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday for Natchitoches Parish and a wide swath of the region, including all of south central and southwest Arkansas, north and central Louisiana, McCurtain County in Oklahoma, and portions of east Texas.

Heat index values are expected to range between 105 and 109 degrees, creating dangerous conditions for prolonged outdoor exposure. The combination of high temperatures and humidity increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions.

Residents are urged to take precautions to stay safe during the advisory:

  • Drink plenty of water and stay in air-conditioned spaces.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Check on elderly neighbors and relatives.
  • Be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Outdoor workers are advised to schedule frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends monitoring co-workers for symptoms of heat illness and ensuring that anyone showing signs of heat stroke is moved to a cool location immediately and receives emergency medical attention.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. If someone is overcome by heat, call 911.
